> Fri.-Sun., Aug. 19–21, 2016: CS360 Top–50 and other conference favorites (summary recap)

PSU 1 WVU 5

> Penn State’s Brittany Basinger (#1) and West Virginia’s Heather Kaleiohi (#5) were part of a rare week-1 battle between top-5 teams, with PSU (cs360 #3) playing to a 1-1 final vs. [5] WVU.

The Opening Week of the 2016 Division I women’s soccer season was a relatively tame one when it comes to top matchups and notable upsets. With most of the CS360 Composite National Rankings preseason Top–50 in action, there were only 14 matchups between top–50 teams while higher-ranked teams  combined for an .856 win pct. (59–7–7) during week-1 games involving top-50 teams.

Opening Day (Fri.; Aug. 19) saw the higher-ranked teams go 31–4–5 (.838), with that number jumping to 28–3–2 (.879; with 13 of the top-50 idle).

With most teams playing only 20 or so games prior to NCAA Tournament selections, each result essentially accounts for 5% of a team’s resume. With that in mind, here a baker’s dozen (13) teams that likely built a strong week–1 foundation for their 2016 NCAA Tournament resumes:

Santa Clara 12

> Jenna Roering scored in the closing moments of the second OT,
lifting Santa Clara (cs360 #23) past longtime Bat Area rival Santa Clara, 3–2.

PRIMETIME TEAM #1 – [23] SANTA CLARA: The homestanding Broncos won a pair of overtime games vs. two of the Pac-12’s top teams, first clipping [8] USC 3–2 (on Kellie Peay’s 97th-minute lunging nudge to connect with Jazmin Jackmon’s ball played over the top) and then edging longtime Bay Area rival [16] California in the closing moments of the second/final OT (107’) – as Jenna Roering (pict. above) took a feed from Jordan Jesolva and drilled a 16-yard bouncer into the left corner. Both of these games easily could have ended as ties (or even losses for SCU), but there’s something to be said for teams that find a way to win in crunch-time overtime situations (just ask Notre Dame, which has struggled over the past few years to deliver OT wins).

FSU 10

> Florida State newcomer Devna Castellanos (10) delivered in a big road setting, scoring 92 seconds into the game at Texas A&M – as the top-ranked Seminoles held on for a 1–0 win over the [9] Aggies.

• PRIMETIME TEAM #2 – [1] FLORIDA STATE: The Seminoles once again find themselves among the nation’s top-5 teams and their primary regular-season goal remains unchanged: position for one of the coveted top-4 national seeds heading into the NCAA Tournament. Knowing that the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season always is filled with land mines, ACC teams can get a big resume boost with any quality non-conference win … particularly on the road. That’s exactly what FSU did: winning 1–0 at [9] Texas A&M, historically one of the most challenging environments for visiting teams (and site of past College Cups, including ones featuring FSU). The ‘Noles scored 92 seconds into the game, after veteran right back Emma Koivisto delivered a strong back from the flank and freshman forward Devna Castellanos (Maracy, Venezuela) showed her deft touch to cash in the chance. The bad news? – over the final 88:28, FSU managed only one more shot on goal … but, on the other hand, A&M totaled only 4 SOG of its own over the full 90’ during a classic midfield battle.

Clemson vs Auburn

> Abby Jones (21) and her cs360 #10-ranked Clemson teammates registered a big Opening Day road victory, winning 2–0 vs. Brooke Ramsier (23) and #14 Auburn.

PRIMETIME TEAM #3 – [10] CLEMSON: The Tigers impressively opened with a 2–0 win at [14] Auburn, followed by a 3–1 victory over another SEC team, Georgia. The orange-and-white version of the Tigers shut out the orange-and-blue Tigers, as Auburn jumped out early behind freshman Julie Mackin’s volley (via a 9th-minute cross from Shannon Horgan) before Catrina Atanda scored early in the second half on a  25-yard shot that found the corner. This notable Opening Week could prove valuable for Clemson when compared with other top teams when NCAA selection time rolls around.

PEP vs Arizona

> Pepperdine’s Nicole Leggio (#25) scored twice vs. Arizona (cs360 #18), as the [35] Waves erased an early deficit to post one of the many big Opening Day wins by WCC teams.

• PRIMETIME TEAM #4 – [35] PEPPERDINE: The Waves were one of five different West Coast Conference teams (also SCU, Portland, BYU and San Francisco – see WCC note below) that knocked off a CS360 Top–50 Team on Opening day, winning 3–1 vs. visiting [18] Arizona – followed by a 3–0 shutout of perennial CS360 Top–50 team Kentucky (currently on the fringe of the top–50). In the win over Arizona, Nicole Leggio scored the tying goal midway through the first half and then assisted on Rylee Baisden’s score before capping the 3–1 win with her second goal of the game (65’). Waves’ keeper Hannah Seabert saved eight of Arizona’s nine shots on goal to pick up the bid day–1 win. Two days later vs. Kentucky, it was Baisden’s turn to score twice – as the Waves wrapped up a productive Opening Weekend.

Oklahoma 12

> Victoria Bowman (#12) helped cs360 #45 Oklahoma turn in a strong Opening Week at home, after playing to a 1–1 result vs. [20] Oklahoma and then blowing out [30] LMU, 4–1.

• PRIMETIME TEAM #5 – [45] OKLAHOMA: If the Sooners find themselves on the NCAA Tournament bubble at season’s end, their hopes will be buoyed by a notable week–1 that included a tie vs. [20] South Carolina and a dominating 4–1 win vs. [30] Loyola Marymount. Kassidie Stade’s eight saves helped secure the tie vs. SC, with Racel Ressler netting the equalizer (70’) after cashing in a deflected cross. Two days later, OU again recovered from an early deficit and rolled to the 4–1 win over LMU – with all of the Sooners goals coming in the final 30 minutes (by Kaylee Dao, Angela Boyle and Jordan Hobart, plus an own-goal, while Liz Keester contributed two assists).

Portland celebrate

> After seeing its longtime NCAA Tournament streak end in 2014, before again missing the NCAAs in 2015, Portland is hoping for a return to the national postseason. The Pilots already have banked a quality win, after besting longtime Northwest rival [39] Washington, 2–1 on Opening Day.

• PRIMETIME TEAM #6 – PORTLAND: The Pilots are eager to return to the NCAA Tournament, after a rare two-year absence from the national postseason. The once-dominant program, which has produced numerous U.S. and Canadian National Team players over the years, produced a quality Opening Day result, besting Northwest rival [39] Washington in a 2–1 game at Portland’s always festive Merlo Field. The hosts earned the draw despite totaling only three corner kicks and three shots on goal over the full 90 minutes – but freshman Larkin Russell was able to knock in a deflected cross for an early Pilots lead (19’). Washington tied the game minutes later, on a PK, and that’s how things ended between the longtime rivals.

––––––––––

USF team

> With its 2–1 win over visiting [33] Florida Gulf Coast, the University of San Francisco (above) joined fellow WCC teams Santa Clara (2), Pepperdine and Portland in upsetting CS360 Top–50 teams … accounting for all but two of the Opening Week upset losses within the Top–50).

Tulsa

OTHER UPSETS, TIES & HEAD-to-HEAD – Five of the Opening Week upsets involving CS360 Top–50 teams saw West Coast Conference teams register the big wins, several of them referenced above (Santa Clara over USC and Cal; Pepperdine vs. Arizona; and Portland over Washington) plus San Francicso’s 2–1 result vs. visiting Atlantic Sun perennial power [33] Florida Gulf Coast. Beyond the five WCC wins, the only other Opening Week upsets in CS360 Top–50 action included Oklahoma’s win over LMU and Iowa’s 2–1 overtime victory over visiting [50] Missouri (the Hawkeyes had forced OT with an 83rd-minute goal).

> Tulsa ’keeper Rebecca Defer (pict. at right) helped the Golden Hurricane register a 1–1 result vs. Loyola Marymount (cs360 #30), in Opening Day tournament action at the University of Oklahoma.

Beyond Oklahoma’s 1–1 result vs. South Carolina, there were six other Opening Week ties involving CS360 Top–50 teams. Most notably, [5]
West Virginia played to a 1–1 standoff at defending NCAA champion [3] Penn State. PSU added a 3–1 win over [43] Hofstra while WVU topped Buffalo 2–0 (also at PSU). The other week–1 ties within the Top–50: Providence 1–1 at [12] Rutgers … Arizona State 1–1 at [26] Boston College … Tulsa 1–1 vs. [30] LMU (at Oklahoma) … Southern Conference favorite Samford 0–0 at [32] South Alabama … and Pittsburgh 1–1 at [36] Michigan.

> The 14 head-to-head matchups within the CS360 Top–50 included eight referenced above, plus these six:
• [4] Duke 3–1 … vs. [49] UCF (at UNC)
• at [11] North Carolina 2–0 … vs. [49] UCF
• [14] Auburn 1–0 … at [32] South Alabama  (2 OT)

• [17] Virginia Tech 1–0 … vs. [37] LSU  (at College of Charleston)
