(9–25–14) – by Pete LaFleur (editor@collegesoccer360.com)

The busiest Thursday so far in the 2014 Division I women's soccer season (Sept. 25) produced several noteworthy results among the 16 games in the CollegeSoccer360 top-50 Composite National Rankings (CNR), with the higher-ranked teams combining to go only 9-3-4 (.688).

Thursday's three upset losses (based on the CS360 top-50) were as follows:

• (14) NOTRE DAME 2-0 at (3) Virginia Tech – After a pair of one-goal losses at Virginia Tech in 2013, and looking to shake the mojo from numerous OT losses vs. ACC teams stretching back to a year ago, the Irish (6-3-1) used second-half goals from Anne Gilbertson and Kaleigh Olmstead to win in Blacksburg and halt Virginia Tech's unbeaten/untied start (10-1; 1-1 ACC, as is ND).

• (38) MARYLAND 1-0 at (29) Iowa
 – Forward Shade Pratt scored on an early far-post shot to the right side (17'), then dropped to the back line and shadowed Iowa's dangerous top scorer Cloe Lacasse for the rest of the game ... the league newcomer Terps evened their record at 2-2 in Big Ten play, after limiting the Hawkeyes to a pair of shots on goal and two corner kicks … fast-starting Iowa now is 8-2 (3-1).

• OREGON 1-0, double-OT home win over (39) Washington – The Ducks (4-3-1) beat the Huskies (6-2) for the first time since 2006, in the Pac-12 opener for both teams … Oregon had managed only two shots on goal through the first 103 minutes of the game before Kira Wagoner ended it on a chip shot that deflected in for her first goal of the season.

And Thursday's four ties within the CS360 top-50:

• (25) Georgetown 3-3 at (24) DePaul – These teams were virtually tied in the CNR and ended this exciting BIG EAST opener with another tie … DePaul (8-0-2) continued its historic start to the season, after doubling up Georgetown (5-2-3) in shots (21-10, plus 10-5 in shots on goal and 7-2 in corners) … the Blue Demons claimed a 3-1 lead early in the second half, via a pair of Elise Wyatt goals sandwiched around an Alexa Ben score – but the Hoyas earned the tie thanks to a couple Sarah Adams goals … early in the game, Daphne Corboz became GU's all-time leading goalscorer (41).

• at (40) Ole Miss 1-1 vs. (32) Arkansas 1 – The Rebels (6-2-3; 1-0-2 SEC) and Razorbacks (5-2-3; 1-0-1) played to a stalemate, with Alex Fisher's rebound goal ('15) giving the visitors the lead while Gretchen Harknett ('69) scored from 25 yards after a failed clearance for the 1-1 final.

at Nebraska 1-1 vs. (26) Rutgers 1 – Despite winning the Big Ten Tournament a year ago, the Huskers (4-4-2; 0-2-2) have yet to win a Big Ten Conference games this season, while RU has started 2-1-1 (6-1-1 overall) in its debut season within the conference … the visitors led early, after a corner-kick sequence produced Brianne Reed's 18-yard rocket shot … Nebraska tied it on Mayme Conroy's third goal of the season.

• at Seattle 1-1 vs. (43) Portland 1 – The Redhawks (4-3-1), picked to win the Western Athletic Conference, finished with the edge in shots (17-12) and corner kicks (10-4) while earning the result against the northwest region's perennial power … the Pilots (3-4-2) remained under .500, with several tough WCC opponents awaiting on the schedule … Seattle led early in the second half, on Natasha Howe's 12-yard shot to the far-right post.

In addition to four of the games referenced above, there was one other head-to-head game on Thursday between CS360 top-50 teams, as (6) North Carolina (5-2-1; 2-0 ACC) won 2-1 at (20) Clemson (7-2-1; 0-2), behind goals from Joanna Boyles and Megan Buckingham (Salma Anastasio's goal at 68' tied it).

Three of the 10 unbeaten teams remaining in Division I women's soccer (among 332 teams) were in action on Thursday, with DePaul earning its tie while Virginia Tech lost and (4) Virginia was a 5-0 winner over visiting Wake Forest. Here are the nine teams that have yet to suffer a loss, heading into the Sept. 26 games:

• (4) Virginia (10-0) – next at (5) Florida State (Sept. 28)
• (9) Texas Tech (9-0) – next at (50) Texas (Sept. 26)
• Arkansas-Little Rock (9-0) – next vs. Appalachian State (Sept. 26)
• (1) UCLA (8-0-1) – next at (23) Arizona State (Sept. 26)
• (2) Stanford (8-0-1) – next at (33) Utah (Sept. 26)
• (24) DePaul (8-0-2) – next vs. Providence (Sept. 28)
• Holy Cross (8-0-2) – next at American (Sept. 27)
• (33) Utah (7-0-2) – next vs. (2) Stanford (Sept. 26)
• (28) Washington State (5-0-2) – next at Oregon State (Sept. 26)

In addition to the four ties mentioned above, plus the Oregon win, there were two other cs360 top-50 games on Thursday that went to overtime. (13) Pepperdine won 1-0 at Cal State Fullerton (on yet another clutch goal from Lynn Williams) while (34) Connecticut scored in the final minute of the first OT for a 2-1 win at East Carolina.

A couple other notes from Thursday: the Pittsburgh at (31) Boston College game had to be moved to nearby Harvard's field (BC won 3-1, in a delayed start) … and (35) BYU saw its offense awaken with a 4-1 win at Denver, in a matchup of NCAA hopefuls and conference favorites (WCC and Summit League).

Earlier in the week, three other conference favorites opened their league slate with victories:

• at Milwaukee 4-1 vs. Illinois-Chicago  (Horizon League)

• Liberty 4-1 at Charleston Southern  (Big South)

• at Monmouth 2-1 vs. Siena  (Metro Atlantic) – Brianne Boyle's late goal (87') gave the Hawks a key win over the Saints (picked to finish third in the MAAC).
