Opening-Day Recap (8/17/12; results, links, photos & more)
Compared to Friday's night's opening-day rash of upsets, Sunday's DI college women's soccer action went a bit more to plan – with only 25 games involving teams in the CS360 Composite Top-40 and only four of those games resulting in upset losses (plus three ties). Wake Forest (#3) – which played to a scoreless draw vs. UNC Wilmington – was the only team in the CB360 top-15 that suffered an upset loss/tie on Sunday.

Minnesota sophomore forward Taylor Uhl (#3) scored five minutes into Friday's season opener vs. 4th-ranked Florida State (the Gophers scored a couple minutes later for a 2-0 lead but lost 3-2 on a goal in the 87th minute). • Pretty shocking score out west, as Cal State Northridge posted easy win (3-0) over San Diego (cs360 #30) … Northridge goals: Amanda Smith 18', Wendy Warner 34' & Stephanie Galarze 49' (2A-Stephanie Norton) … CSUN outshot San Diego12-7 (7-4 shots-on-goal), USD had 5-3 margin in corner kicks.
• A fourth CS360 top-40 game was affected by lightning delays this weekend – they started late (2 CT) at Marquette, Florida State up 3-0 at half. … So that's CB360 top-40 games delayed by lightning this weekend in Storrs, CT; Annapolis, MD; Tampa, FL (late start Sun., Miami at South Florida); & Milwaukee, WI. … Lightning Strikes Again (another potential win wiped out) – Florida State at Marquette goes as "no-result" (FSU led 3-0 thru 47'). … UConn (3-2 v. UCLA) & FSU (3-0 at Marquette) both had 2nd-half leads this week when games called due to lightning (no W; need 70' for official).
• Impressive weekend from Penn State (cs360 #9) – despite absence of talented forward duo Maya Hayes/Taylor Schram (playing with U.S. U-20s): 3-1 win at (6) Virginia; 5-0 St. John's.
• Miami failed to ride momentum of Friday win at Florida (4-1), losing 1-0 today at South Florida (goal at '51 from Sharia Passariello). … Miami lost despite 12-9 edge in total shots (6-1 shots-on-goal; 8-6 corner kicks).
• Illinois State – which tied (16) Memphis in preseason – played to 1-1 final w/ cs360 #18 Illinois today … Illini 26-17 shots edge (11-4 SOG; 5-5 CKs) … Illinois State led Illinois on goal by Rachel Tejada 22' … visiting Illini tied it on Nicole Breece goal 30' (ast-Niki Read from deep corner).
• Subpar first weekend for South Carolina (cs360 #28) – 0-0 at Milwaukee on Fri. and then lost 2-1 today at Minnesota in OT. … Minnesota's Taylor Uhl scored 1:27 into game and South Carolina's Lani Smith then had tying goal in final second of 1st half. … Looks like 44:59 goal by SC so. forward Smith was a desperation shot from 25 yds, looked routine but thru 'keeper Cat Parkhill's hands. … Minnesota nice GWG sequence (97'): Allie Phillips service from rt flank, Taylor Uhl flick near rt post, fr. M Haley Helverson scored at left post. … Minnesota had stat edge in shots (12-7), SOG (6-4) & corners (7-2).
• Another scoreless draw, this time at Villanova vs. visiting Maryland (cs360 #17) ... Wildcats sr. 'keeper Kelsey Quinn w/ 6 saves … Terps had 20-12 shot edge, 6-4 SOG, 13-5 corners.
• Rutgers (cs360 #40) edged visiting (30) Ohio State 1-0 on double-OT goal (101:00) from Jonelle Filigno (started for Canada at Olympics). … sr./jr. forward Filigno – who had solid Olympic showing w/ Canada (scored goal & started) had 3 of the 4 RU goals this week.

• Wake Forest (cs360 #3) – playing w/out star forward Katie Stengel (w/ U-20s) – was tied today by UNC Wilmington (0-0, at Virginia Tech) … Huge day for UNCW sr 'keeper Caitlin Hunter, saved all 10 shots (15 total) & dealt w/ 8 corners … WFU had 15-10 edge in total shots, 10-4 shots-on-goal & 8-2 corners.

UNC Wilmington senior 'keeper Caitlin Hunter's busy day in the scoreless battle vs. Wake Forest included 10 saves and defensing eight corner kicks.
• Sunday's 13 idle CS360 top-40 teams (8 of top-160) included: (1) Stanford, (6) North Carolina, (10) Texas A&M, (11) Boston College), (13) Notre Dame, (14) Florida, (15) Santa Clara, (16) Memphis, (20) Pepperdine, (22) Louisville, (24) William & Mary, (25) LSU and (26) Long Beach State. Two of those teams – A&M (at UC Irvine) and LSU (at Oklahoma) – both are set to open their seasons tomorrow (Monday, Aug. 20).
