(10/12/16) – See left sidebar for updated CS360 exclusive DI women’s soccer Composite National Rankings (CNR) Top–50, following Week–8. Five teams entered/re-entered the Top–50:[39] Wisconsin, [40] Baylor, [45] Marquette, [49] Bucknell and [50] Portland … while Texas A&M, South Alabama, Oregon, Harvard and Washington State have slipped outside the Top–50.

Multiple teams have enjoyed their highest ranking in the 9-year history of the CNR (based on current/recent rankings) – including current #1 West Virginia, [3] South Carolina, [4] USC, [7] BYU and [8] Georgetown … making for a refreshing departure from the “usual suspects” (will be great to see if any of these teams can make an historic trip to the College Cup final weekend/semifinals).

… But speaking of usual suspects, nearly 60% (29 of 50) of the current CS360 Top–50 hail from four conferences: 10 ACC, eight Big Ten, six Pac-12 and five SEC (plus six from the WCC, five Big 12 and four AAC, along with two BIG EAST, two Big West, and one each from the Ivy League and Patriot League).

Next week, CS360 will have an in-depth look into the CS360 Top–50 – including a look at the 15 current Top–50 teams that were not in the preseason Top–50 – such as #8 Georgetown, [18] Arkansas, [24] Colorado, [29] Utah, [30] NC State, [33] Kansas, [34] Nebraska, [36] SMU, [40] Baylor, [42] Louisville, [44] San Diego, [45] Marquette, [47] USCB, [49] Bucknell and [50] Portland – along with preseason Top–50 teams currently outside of the Top–50, such as preseason #9 Texas A&M, [18] Arizona, [28] Ole Miss, [32] South Alabama, [33] Florida Gulf Coast, [37] LSU, [39] Washington, [40] UNC Wilmington, [41] CS Fullerton, [42] St. John’s, [43] Hofstra, [46] William & Mary, [47] Harvard, [48] North Texas and [49] Washington State.

This week’s CNR top–5 includes three teams – [3] BYU (up from #5), [4] West Virginia (down from #2) and surging [5] Georgetown (#16 a week ago and outside the preseason top–50) – that are enjoying their highest rankings in the 9-year history of the CNR.

One week after knocking off then-#2 Virginia, Georgetown turned in yet another win over a CS350 #2 team, WVU – helping vault the Hoyas into their current #5 position. Florida has slipped from 3rd to 6th, after losing at Arkansas (which has moved from 26th to 18th). Four teams have entered the Top–50: [45] Oregon, [46] NC State, [48] Portland and [49] South Alabama … while Harvard, UNC Wilmington, Hofstra and George Washington now find themselves outside of the Top–50.

Stanford remains in the top spot for the second straight week while another unbeaten/once tied team, West Virginia, has climbed from #4 to #2 (WVU’s highest ranking in the 9-year history of the CNR), after a big 3–1 win at then-#6 Duke. from CS360 Top–50 (Aug. 19–21, 2016)

HERE WE GO AGAIN … (8/21/16) – CollegeSoccer360’s exclusive Composite National Rankings (CNR) have returned for the ninth season in 2016, with Florida State holding the top spot (98.93, out of max. 100), closely followed by Stanford (98.22) and defending NCAA champion Penn State (98.13).

The rest of the CNR preseason Top-50 includes (4th thru 10th): Duke, West Virginia, Florida, USC, Texas A&M and Clemson.

(Scroll down for further breakdown of the CNR preseason Top–50.)

Here are links to the six elements – five core factors and one small bonus – that were used for the CNR 2016 preseason formula:

• NSCAA coaches poll  (NSCAA; 44 teams)
• Soccer America rankings  (SA; top-25)
• TopDrawerSoccer.com rankings (TDS; top-30)

• BennettRank computerized listing (BEN; top-60 teams)
• Our Game magazine rankings (OG; 31 teams)
plus small bonus for:
• Predicted finish in preseason conference polls:
… ACC  |  Pac-12  |  Big Ten  |  SEC  |  Big 12
Big East  |  WCC  |  AAC  |  Colonial  |  Big West
Sun Belt  |  Atlantic Sun  |  Conferene USA

As a reminder, the CS360 Composite National Rankings are more than a simple average of polls/rankings/computerized lists (see full description at bottom of page), as in some cases both the team rankings and the voting points within a certain poll are factored into the formula – meaning that teams receiving nearly the same voting points receive similar credit in the CNR formula (even though their actual ranking in that specific poll is different) while in other cases there may be two teams separated by only one ranking spot in a poll but their actual voting points are beyond the standard deviation. Again, these factors are reflected in the CNR formula to give a more accurate depiction of each team relative to the others.

For this 2016 preseason CNR, the five core elements are averaged (on an initial max. scale of 60) and the final 100-point scale is completed by adding 39 and then including one bonus factor (max. 1.0) based on predicted conference finish (which could lead to an automatic bid in the NCAAs).

The 2016 preseason CNR Top-50 features the following breakdown (29 of the 50 come from the top-4 conferences, with a total of 14 conferences accounting for the entire top–50, up considerably from 2015 when only nine conferences comprised the preseason top–50):

• ACC (8): 1–Florida State, 4–Duke, 6–Virginia, 10–Clemson, 11–UNC 17–Va. Tech, 21–Notre Dame & 26–BC
•
Pac-12 (7): 2–Stanford, 8–USC, 16–Cal, 18–Arizona, 22–UCLA, 29–Washington State & 39–Washington State
•
Big Ten (7): 3–Penn St, 12–Rutgers, 19–Ohio St, 25–Minnesota, 27–Wisconsin, 34–Northwestern & 36–Mich.
•
SEC (7): 7–Florida, 9–Texas A&M, 14–Auburn, 20–South Carolina, 28–Ole Miss, 37–LSU & 50–Missouri
• WCC (4): 15–BYU, 23–Santa Clara, 30–LMU & 35–Pepperdine
• Big 12 (3): 5–West Virginia, 24–Texas Tech & 45–Oklahoma
•
American Athletic (3): 13–Connecticut, 38–South Florida & 49–UCF
•
Colonial (3): 40–UNC Wilmington, 43–Hofstra & 46–William & Mary
•
Ivy League (2): 31–Princeton & 47–Harvard
•
Big West (2): 41–Cal State Fullerton & 44–Long Beach State
•
Sun Belt (1): 3outh Alabama
• Atlantic Sun (1): 33–Florida Gulf Coast
• BIG EAST (1): 42–St. John’s
• Conference USA (1): 48–North Texas

By comparison, back in 2015 the preseason Top-50 conference breakdown was as follows: (9) Pac-12, (9) SEC, (8) ACC, (8) Big Ten, (6) Big 12, (3) WCC, (3) AAC, (3) Big East and (1) CAA.

… And two years ago, the conference breakdown for the 2014 preseason CNR top-50 was as follows: 10–Pac-12, 9–ACC, 8–SEC, 8–Big Ten, 5–Big 12, 3–WCC, 2–BIG EAST, 2–Mountain West, 1–AAC, 1–Summit and 1–Patriot.

The 2013 preseason CNR top–50 included: 10 from the ACC, 9–Pac-12, 8–SEC, 6–Big Ten, 4–WCC, 4–Big 12, 3–BIG EAST, 2–Big West and one each from the Mt. West, Summit, Ivy and Mid-American).

The final CNR of the 2015 season – released in early Nov. (prior to the postseason) – featured four teams that are not in the 2016 CNR preseason top-50: (40) Cincinnati, (43) Arizona State, (46) San Diego State and (47) Georgetown. Four other teams – (22) UCLA , (33) Florida Gulf Coast, (35) Pepperdine and (47) Harvard – were not in the final 2015 CNR top-50 (prior to the postseason) but now find themselves in the CNR top-50 entering 2016.

Several teams have made big jumps within the CNR top-50, when comparing their standing in the final 2015 CNR (prior to the conference postseason) to the 2015 preseason listing:
• Duke (#18 to #4. buoyed by return of most key players from ’15 runner-up team)
• Ohio State (#30 to #19)
• Texas A&M (#21 to #9)
• LMU (#41 to #30)
• UNC Wilmington (#50 to #40)
• Princeton (#39 to #31)

… And one year previously, the final CNR of the 2014 season featured seven teams that were not in the 2015 CNR preseason top-50: (29) San Diego State, (30) Florida Gulf Coast, (33) La Salle, (43) Colgate, (45) Boston Univ., (47) Alabama and (49) Utah. Seven other teams – (26) Duke, (30) Colorado, (35) St. John’s, (41) Tennessee, (44) Maryland, (48) Oklahoma and (50) Northeastern – were not in the final 2014 CNR top-50 (prior to the postseason) but found themselves in the CNR top-50 entering 2015.

Several 2015 teams made big jumps within the CNR top-50, when comparing their standing in the final 2014 CNR (prior to the postseason) to the 2015 preseason listing:
• USC (#44 to #19), buoyed by the addition of ND transfer Morgan Andrews
• Connecticut (#50 to #28)
• Boston College (#46 to #33)
• Kentucky (#23 to #14)
• California (#24 to #15)

What a Difference a Year Makes – A considerable number of teams (16) that were among the 2015 CNR preseason top-50 are not in the CNR top-50 as we enter into 2016: (14) Kentucky, (22) DePaul, (25) Arizona State, (27) Georgetown, (30) Colorado, (37) Kentucky, (40) Texas, (41) Tennessee, (42) Arkansas, (43) Georgia, (44) Maryland, (45) Iowa, (46) Illinois, (49) Oklahoma State and (50) Northeastern.

… One year earlier, there similarly were 15 teams that were among the 2014 CNR preseason top-50 but were not in the CNR top-50 as we entered into 2015: (16) Portland, (17) Wake Forest, (19) Marquette, (24) Nebraska , (31) Mississippi, (33) Louisville, (34) Denver, (37) Utah, (38) Ohio State, (39) Baylor, (40) LSU, (41) Colorado College, (42) Iowa, (45) San Diego State and (47) Boston Univ.

There are 16 teams in the 2016 preseason Top–50 that were not part of the 2015 preseason Top–50: (19) Ohio State, (28) Ole Miss, (30) LMU, (31) Princeton, (32) South Alabama, (33) Florida Gulf Coast, (34) Northwestern, (37) LSU, (40) UNC Wilmington, (41) CS Fullerton, (43) Hofstra, (44) Long Beach State, (46) William & Mary, (47) Harvard and (48) North Texas.

Notes on CS360's Composite National Rankings Formula (created by Pete LaFleur):
The CNR closely resembles the composite national rankings on CS360's sister site, CollegeBaseball360.com. The CNR consists of an average of multiple polls/ratings and the CNR point totals ultimately are scaled to a convenient 100-point format.

In the raw formula, a #1-ranked team in any of the polls/ratings typically receives 60 points, the #2 team gets 59, etc. The Soccer America poll is the most basic in this regard, as it has a top-25 and no "also receiving votes" teams. When two or more teams are tied for one spot, they receive an equal share of the combined points for those spots. In the end, each team can receive a a maximum of 60 CNR points from each of the seven polls/ratings. That total then is divided by seven and then 40 typically is added to yield the score on the handy 100-point scale (at the beginning and end of seasons, the number added often is a bit less, such as 38, to allow for bonus points to be factored into the formula).

One wrinkle within the CNR formula credits teams based on voting or rating "points" in certain polls/ratings (in addition to their spots on the list). By using this correction, teams that have virtually the same number of voting points then will receive nearly the same amount of credit in the CNR (conversely, teams that have a wider margin in votes or rating points will have a bigger gap in their credits within the CNR formula).

Additional analysis of the 2016 preseason CNR forthcoming.
